What is Voice Work?
Welcome to the art of the sermon - voice work. This is going to be a fruitful journey for you. We want to jump right into the exercises but we need to go over a few concepts first so that we will have a common set of vocuabulary when describing things. So the first few lectures will deal with conecpts however if you really want to get to the work feel free to jump into the exersices. Just be sure to read the lecture on resistance if you dont read anything else. However I encourage you to go in order to get the most out of this class.
There are two major disciplines when it comes to speaking, storytelling and acting. Voice work and speech work. Most people have heard of public speaking training such as you get in college or at a toastmasters course, but most have never heard of voice work.
Voice work is by far the most important. Voice work has to do with many things but the easiest way to understand it is that it deals with the sound of your voice; your vocal quality. No matter how good a speaker you are you can be fairly sure you are not operating at your full potential without voice work.
To experience the benefits of this training you must commit yourself to training. To working on your voice 3-5 times a week. If you are not willing to do this you will no more find improvement than you would from going to a music session once a week but never practicing.
Training is how individuals find improvement in all disciplines from olympic competition to musicians to your voice. With training you will find real improvement. There is something to be said about the reality that there are elements of voice work that can only be learned in the presence of a coach which is why most of my students work with me in person or online. However this course will give you a great introduction to voice work and then you may contact me if you wish to go deeper.
The course is broken up between knowledge base information and experiential training. after each section where an exercise is demonstrated be sure to practice the exercise. With each exercise there is a level of awareness we want you to gain so be sure to pay attention to where your mind should be focused while you practice the discipline.
Lets first look at some hard research though on if the voice really even matters.
